The incident, which occurred at about 8 p.m., claimed the lives of numerous commuters who were stranded in their automobiles in the severe traffic jam on the East-West highway, which the federal government was reconstructing in front of the Indorama Eleme Petrochemicals entrance.
Witnesses claim that the accident was caused by a petrol tanker that leaked after it collided with another truck that was allegedly owned by Indorama Eleme Petrochemicals and carrying a different kind of cargo.
An eyewitness at the scene of the tragedy related how the fire killed the passengers of other automobiles that were stranded in the long traffic jam.
An additional witness who was at the scene on Saturday morning stated that the contractor was to blame for the number of casualties.
